I am using PandoraFMS Community on my local network and have added the Host Alive module to monitor if my local servers are up or not and this is working fine. How would I do something similiar on a remote network as the ICMP packets will not get through the firewalls of the remote networks? I am currently monitoring several servers at remote locations using Tentacle and this is working fine so is it possible to use this in some way? Thanks in advance for any help.Chris 1 Reply HelloI think that what you are looking for could be a software agent in proxy mode, this kind of agents serve to forward between different networks the information reported by the remote agents, I leave you a link to the wiki so you can get more information and configure it if that is what you are looking for. You wish to manually stop Pandora FMS server, you must also previously have stopped the Watchdog process to prevent it from trying to start the service automatically continuously.History databaseA history database is a database where old module data are transferred to make the main Pandora FMS database more responsive for everyday operations. Those data will still be available for Pandora FMS console when viewing reports, module charts etc.Setting up a history databaseTo configure a history database, it is necessary to have a new server where to host it (different from the one of the main database). Once you have that server where MySQL is installed, follow these steps:In Pandora FMS console, go to Management → Setup → Setup → History database to access connection configuration (Configure connection target).Fill in the following fields:Host: Host name (web link or IP address) of the history database.Port: Connection port of the history database. Stardard value: 3306.Database name: Name of the history database. Default value: pandora.Database user: History database user. Default value: pandora.Database password: Password of the history database. This will allow to connect to the history database. The last fields of this form Data days old to keep in active database, Transference block size (Step) and Delay between transferences (seconds) will define the way in which the data will be sent to the history database, that is, the oldest data, those with more than n days (Data days), will be moved to the history database in blocks of n rows (Step) waiting n seconds (Delay) between one block and the next to avoid overloading. In the same screen, it is also possible to decide whether to send events with more than n days to the history database (Events days old to keep in active database), although it must be taken into account that including the events will considerably increase the growth rate of the history database, and that these will only be checked when generating reports, not in the event view. The history database uses the /usr/bin/pandora_db binary to transfer data. In addition, configure the settings for history database maintenance.Go back to Pandora FMS documentation index. Its contents. This is done by doing a full database dump, both of the table structure as well as their contents. This command has several options to do a backup, and its most basic usage is enough to dump from the same system where the database is hosted. For instance, to backup pandora database ( root user and password pandora) and dump the result to a file, run the following:mysqldump -u root -p pandora> /backup/pandoradb_backup.sqlFrom a backup done that way, you may fully restore the database. Login in MySQL, proceed to create the database that will be restored and then load the backup in that database. Following the previous example (replace mypassword with your password):mysql -u root -pCREATE DATABASE pandora;USE pandora;SOURCE /backup/pandoradb_backup.sql;GRANT ALL privileges ON pandora.* TO pandora@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'mypassword';exit; Finally, it is necessary to set configured user permissions again both in Pandora FMS Console and server so they have total access to the database (replace mypassword by your password):GRANT ALL privileges ON pandora.* TO pandora@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'mypassword';Pandora FMS complete backup and restoreThere is a script in Pandora FMS server distribution that is used to make a backup and a complete restore of the whole Pandora FMS. This script is conceived to make copies and restoration in systems where the server and the console are located in the same machine. It is designed to backup and restore the following components: Server configuration file(s). Files(s) pending execution, as well as remote configuration agent files.Database, complete.Web Console, complete. If there are different components in the environment, you should use the tool with the most appropriate parameters for your use or modify them to suit the circumstances. This script needs to run as root. You are the only responsible for this key. It is located at:/usr/share/pandora_server/util/pandora_backup.shWhen running it without any parameters, the help menu will be displayed.Watchdog implementation for Pandora FMSIn the code repository, there is a small script that is used as Watchdog. This script monitors Pandora FMS status. Thus you may perform a recovery operation (trying to start Pandora FMS), and if that fails, a warning must be issued. This tool is at:/usr/share/pandora_server/util/pandora_watchdog.shScript for alert generationThe pandora_watchdog.sh script looks for a file in /usr/bin/pandora_alert with the instructions to generate the alert. This file must be created defining the code to be executed when the watchdog cannot activate the Pandora FMS server. In this example, in addition to warning through a SMS, it stops the Tentacle server:#!/bin/bashsendsms +34458474843 "The Pandora FMS has suffered some issue and it cannot be started."systemctl stop tentacle_serverdGrant execution permissions to this script:chmod 750 /usr/bin/pandora_alertWatchdog startupTo launch the Watchdog and leave it workin in the background, execute the following:nohup /usr/share/pandora_server/util/pandora_watchdog.sh &When starting a Watchdog, bear in mind that if for maintenance reasonsPandora FMS Open Source versus Pandora FMS ONE - Pandora FMS
Manual startup/shutdown for Pandora FMS serversPlease note that if for maintenance reasons you wish to manually stop Pandora FMS server, verify whether a service Watchdog is running. Check this section for more details. To start or stop manually Pandora FMS server, run the following in a shell console: Stop the daemon:systemctl stop pandora_server Start the daemon:systemctl start pandora_server Restart the daemon:systemctl restart pandora_serverYou may monitor the status of pandora_ha through systemd with:systemctl status pandora_ha.serviceDatabase managementThere is an essential tool for proper Pandora FMS performance, which is in charge of carrying out these tasks. Its location is:/usr/bin/pandora_dbThis tool, hereinafter pandora_db.pl is included in Pandora FMS server package, so it must be run from a system where there is a Pandora FMS server installed.pandora_db is a key tool for Pandora FMS to work properly, and that is why its execution is programmed in system cron tasks with an hourly interval. Its execution is configured within file:/etc/cron.hourly/pandora_dbThis tool performs all database maintenance tasks automatically: It deletes old data. It compresses existing data. It checks the consistency of the database for non-existing modules or uninitialized modules. It deletes the daily agent contact information. It moves all old data to the standby history database. As mentioned before, pandora_db execution is configured in system cron tasks and although this execution is automatically included in Pandora FMS server installation, it is convenient to check it. Therefore, /etc/cron.hourly/pandora_db must exist and contain the following:"/usr/bin/pandora_db" "/etc/pandora/pandora_server.conf">/dev/null 2>&1It is equally important to check permissions and the file's owner. The appropriate file permissions would be 755, which can be granted by running:chmod 755 /etc/cron.hourly/pandora_dbRegarding the owner, it must be root both for the user and group, which is set executing:chown root:root /etc/cron.hourly/pandora_dbMaintenance tool manual executionIf necessary, it is possible to launch pandora_db execution manually as it was exposed in the previous section. Execute from a shell the following:/usr/bin/pandora_db /etc/pandora/pandora_server.confThis may take hours in overloaded systems, so it is recommended to execute the process in the background. To execute manually the maintenance tool and leave it in the background, run:nohup /usr/bin/pandora_db /etc/pandora/pandora_server.confThe process will take some time until it loads completely in the background. Then, you may close the shell console window, while the process will still be executed. It is very important to make sure you are using the updated tool version, and not that of a previous version. If you execute the program without arguments, it will show the tool version at the head of the message and it must match the version installed on the server.Database BackupIt is important to remember that this only backs up or restores the database, without including other files, nor the server configuration. The command mysqldump will do a complete database dump of the table structure as well asPandora FMS on Windows 8 - Pandora FMS
This section covers various aspects of Pandora FMS management: user creation, group administration, backups, etc.Profiles, Users, Groups and ACLsPandora FMS is a web management tool. Thanks to the 100% multitenant permission system, multiple users with different permissions can work, accessing the information of the same Pandora FMS setup without some seeing the information of others. To add users, it is important to have the groups and profiles well defined, being clear about what data each user needs to view and/or modify.Users on Pandora FMSUsers are managed from Management → Profiles → Manage users. By default you can view the defined users:Notable fields when creating or editing:Administrator user: An Administrator user (superadmin) will not be governed by the internal ACL system and will have access to everything. The standard user will be governed by the Pandora FMS ACL permissions assigned to them.Login Error: If this field is checked, the user will only be able to access the API but not interactively through the console.Local user: To perform user authentication against your own database. PFMS also supports other authentication methods.Control of timeout session: By default activated, it checks if there has been no activity in the time period set in Session time (mins) to close the session.Session time (mins): The default value is 90 minutes and when you set this value to 0 for a user, Pandora FMS will use the value saved in the General Settings, authentication section.Language: By default it is the system language. You can also assign a specific language in which the user will see the Pandora FMS Console.Block size for pagination: Default pagination size for that user.Timezone: Field where the time zone of the console is set to display different elements (General view of agents, View of modules, …).Login allowed IP list: If you activate this option, login will be limited to a list of IP addresses (and/or ranges) separated by commas. To connect from any IP address use the * (asterisk) wildcard.Profiles/Groups assigned to this user: Selection of profiles and/or groups in which the user will be organized or have access.Editing of a User by the user himselfAll users can modify certain parameters of their own configuration in Workspace → Edit my User. The user creation form will appear where you can configure some sections, except for group permissions.Version 768 or later: You can authenticate with API Token by submitting to HTTP headers of a bearer token, generated by each user and for their own private and particular use. If a warning icon appears adjacent to the API Token configure the file php.conf.Notification settingsPandora FMS has a notification system for its users and, in addition, to facilitate its administration it also has group management.
