Its prodigious run time of three hours and 12 minutes is also preventing as many screenings from being run in each theater per day, so while the grosses each weekend may be lower than expected, they will likely stay consistent and add up to a spectacular number. However, it may not be the case that Avatar: The Way of Water will be able to become the number one highest-grossing film of the year. Because of its December 16 release date, it only has two weeks before the end of the year to compete with some record-breaking hits like the legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick. That film is currently the highest-grossing title of the year with $1.49 billion, which would require Avatar to make the same amount or higher over the next two weekends in order to match that total before New Year's, which seems entirely unlikely. Disney has delayed the release of Avatar 3, 4 and 5, pushing the release date for the third instalment back by a year. Initially scheduled for release next year, Avatar 3, the follow-up to Avatar: The Way of Water will now premiere on December 19, 2025 (via Variety). Meanwhile, both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 have had their release dates pushed back by three years each. Fox Avatar 4 has a new release date of December 21, 2029, while Avatar 5 will now debut on December 19, 2031, which means fans won't get to see the fifth instalment for another eight years. While James Cameron always had a four-movie plan to follow up 2009's Avatar, the new delays will mean the fifth instalment is now set for release 22 years after the original.Following the news, Avatar producer Jon Landau took to Twitter to explain the reason for the delays."Each Avatar film is an exciting but epic undertaking that takes time to bring to the quality level we as filmmakers strive for and audiences have come to expect," he wrote. Despite Avatar being immensely popular among Chinese moviegoers, the film’s release coincided with one of the country’s worst pandemic waves of the last two years as new COVID variants have surfaced in China, thus triggering a national health crisis. After this past weekend, The Way of Water had only earned $190m China, a number that pales in comparison to the first movie’s $261.82 total, and one that will surely have Disney executives unhappy about its performance. Nevertheless, per The Hollywood Reporter, Chinese regulators have extended the Avatar sequel’s license so that The Way of Water can be screened for another 30 days on top of the one-month permit normally given to foreign movies. Since The Way of Water’s China premiere coincided with the rest of the world, before this extension, Avatar 2 would have been taken down from theaters on January 15, though now it will stay well past China’s New Year’s celebrations, which take place on January 22 this year. According to sources familiar with China’s movie scene, the decision is a rare one, especially because government authorities tend to keep Hollywood movies away from theaters whenever there’s a national day since that’s the date Chinese studios prefer to release their own blockbusters. This year, The Way of Water would face stiff competition from The Wandering Earth 2, a prequel to the 2019 Chinese blockbuster that earned $700m in revenue. Just like everywhere else, The Way of Water is expected to drop off significantly three to four weeks after being out, yet it seems like extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures many people in China might have not been able to attend local screenings.
