| June 1, 2017June 2, 2017 | Reviews Gorillaz HumanzParlophone/Warner Bros. [2017]Fire Note Says: Cartoon urban, dance/rap-core band, Gorillaz return with a mix-tape for the apocalypse. Album Review: Two cartoon bands come to mind: Gorillaz, and The Archies. Okay, The Monkees’ four characters were definitely conceived as cartoon-esque two-dimensional stick figures, but as time developed they grew as individualized, even humanized themselves. While you can’t say the same thing about Damon Albarn and J.C. Hewlett’s cartoon creations that make up the pretend band of “post-apocalyptic youth,” at least musically, Humanz may actually be the most human product of their 5-album collaboration (Gorillaz have released four albums commercially: the eponymous debut, (2001); Demon Days (2005); Plastic Beach (2010); and, this latest collection. The Fall was also released in 2010 as a download only through the band’s fanclub.). Which is to say, that although the seven-year-old project Plastic Beach felt more like an artistic whole with its eco-friendly expressions wrapped up in the album’s conceptual shaping, here on Humanz, Albarn and his many collaborators express a more exuberant and less focused vision this time around. In other words, the 16 diverse songs that make up the release, feel as though they are as pulling us in as many different directions as they can. What is constant, is Albarn and his studio cohorts love of deep groove, and trust in their collaborators to develop moving and evocative melody lines. And it works. The funniest interlude here is performed by comedian Steve Martin, but sounds a lot like a Monty Python riff in the movie “The Life of Brian” shortly after his mother asserts that “he’s not the messiah, he’s a very naughty boy.” In the movie, Brian preaches to the crowd who has followed him home, “You’re all individuals,” to which the entire crowd echoes back his words, and then one poor guy raises his had to say, “I’m not.” For the Gorillaz “Non-Conformist Oath,” the crowd all commits simultaneously to be “different” and “unique.” The joke is on a culture that is shaped by a compelling desire to fit in, and be In the spring of 2016, Damon Albarn tells Pusha T to picture, if he would, an album that envisioned Donald Trump winning the presidency. Albarn was working on new Gorillaz material, the first in six years, and he had been squinting at the man brandishing his shriveled claws at his Republican challengers and bragging about his dick size and imagining him in charge of the free world. “When it really happened,” Pusha T said, “I was like, ‘Wait a minute…I started wondering like, what type of crystal ball did this guy have?”It’s a funny little anecdote, considering how closely the fifth studio album from Gorillaz resembles its predecessors in tone, style, and mood. The cartoon-band project of Albarn and Jamie Hewlett has evolved into a surprising little institution by relying on a sturdy formula: Return every few years with an album loaded up with au courant guests and a doomsday vibe that fits whatever disaster is currently dominating the headlines. Post-9/11 panic? Great Recession malaise? Trumpian discontent? Gorillaz have a song for that somewhere. Hitting play on a Spotify blender of Gorillaz will take you across eras, continents, genres—Bobby Womack will show up, as will Lou Reed and Ibrahim Ferrer and Tina Weymouth. But somehow, it will all sound like the inside of the same suburban-mall Gamestop, circa 2000. Damon Albarn’s vague ideas about societal passivity and dystopia feel roughly the same now as they did around the release of the first Gorillaz album, and they will probably feel the same in 2028, when President Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is running for reelection. As usual, the guest list on Humanz promises untold riches—Vince Staples, Danny Brown, Kelela, Pusha T, Mavis Staples, D.R.A.M., and Jehnny Beth from Savages—on which the music doesn’t deliver. No matter the rotating cast, Gorillaz tracks come in a few basic colors and flavors: A stew of fat drums, gloomy synth patches, crooned and muttered hooks from Albarn in the background. With this reliable frame, every guest ends up smeared with Gorillaz makeup and bearing a whiff of Suicide Squad-style corporate menace.Humanz mostly feels like a playlist as a result, with each song acting as a self-contained referendum on how this particular guest fares in Gorillaz World. Vince Staples sprints his way through “Ascension” without finding much traction in his surroundings. The joy and weightlessness that Popcaan brings so naturally to his usual guest spots is extinguished by the the drizzly murk of “Saturnz Barz.” De La Soul, who showed up on Gorillaz’s 2005 hit “Feel Good, Inc.” and on Plastic Beach, are jostled by a clomping, inelegant beat on “Momentz” that gives them none of the room to sound effortless or funny or wry or observant. – “Army of Me” Bjork’s musical repertoire is vast, and deeply experimental – there are layers upon layers to discover. That said, we could’ve easily recommended “Venus As A Boy” or “It’s Oh So Quiet”, tracks that broke the mainstream into a million pieces. However, we’ve decided to go with “Army Of Me”. Taken from her sophomore album, this track is widely loved, no doubt, but it’s harsher – more confrontational. It’s empowering, referring to ‘the self’ as an army – and it’s coupled with a spellbindingly surreal music video. In the visuals, Bjork drives a colossal tank, proceeds to get a diamond pulled from her teeth by a gorilla dentist, and then blows up an art museum? It’s as esoteric as we’ve come to expect from Bjork, but that’s precisely why we love her. Bad Bunny – “Si Veo a Tu Mamá” Taking a sample from the Bossa Nova classic, “The Girl From Ipanema”, “Si Veo a Tu Mamá” is a bop to its core. Bad Bunny has a knack for crafting up addictive tunes, and we think this track shows his sheer talent. Lamenting a lost love, Bad Bunny hides the melancholy under the layers of a head-bopping beat, and stellar production chops. Gorillaz – “Out Of Body” There’s a mountain of Gorillaz tracks that everyone and their mother knows – so we thought we’d offer up a lesser-known track, “Out Of Body”. Taken from Humanz, released in 2021, this song is a meeting of minds. A collaborative effort between Kilo Kish, Zebra Katz, and Imani Vonshà, “Out Of Body” is a sonic journey. Soft spoken word riffs off of electronic embellishments, as the track crescendos, and builds intensity. Culminating in a feat of euphoric synths, “Out Of Body” is the perfect track to watch the city’s lights whizz past on a late night drive. Charli XCX – “Hot Girl” Crafted up for the A24 film Bodies, bodies, bodies, “Hot Girl” is thrilling. A revving engine propels the song forward, as a thumping bass lays the foundation for Charli XCX’s take-no-shit lyrics to have their fun. Phrases like. Fallen empire. The song speaks about the decay of capitalism and mankind's negligence of the environment. Popularity Despite not being released as a single, it gained popularity and is seen as one of the standout tracks on the album. Musical Instruments The song uses two different styles of keyboards: the mellow sound of the Rhodes electric piano for the first half, and synthesizer tones for the second half. Concept "Empire Ants" reflects the overall concept of the "Plastic Beach" album which focuses on the detrimental impact of human activities on the environment and adopts an oceanic theme. Live Performances The song was performed live numerous times during the Gorillaz' “Escape to Plastic Beach” tour in 2010, often featuring Yukimi Nagano making a guest appearance. Critical Acclaim The song is often praised by critics for its unexpected mid-song genre shift and the artists' ability to smoothly meld the contrasting styles together.
