To better understand the basis for this physiological feat, Scott et al. (2009) compared the flight muscle of Bar-headed Geese to that of low altitude birds (Barnacle Geese, Pink-footed Geese, Greylag Geese, and Mallard ducks). Mitochondria make their own endogenous antioxidants, but over time can't make enough. Fortunately, there are several things that can help them out: astaxanthin, curcumin, quercetin, resveratrol or pterostilbene, and nicotinamide.
