And then … the candidate quit. “I have thousands of people in my hiring pipeline, and many are disappearing before their start dates,” says the talent acquisitions manager of a large firm.It seems each week presents new wrinkles in the topsy-turvy world of corporate hiring and workers quitting. The latest is that the churn now begins before candidates make it to their start dates. In leaving before starting, experts say, workers are exposing a weakness in a traditionally slow onboarding process that has long plagued companies and employees alike. “It’s absolutely necessary for people to figure this out and speed up processes,” says Radhika Papandreou, sector leader of Korn Ferry’s Travel, Leisure, and Hospitality practice. “I don’t think they know how to hire fast and screen efficiently.”Historically, large firms have taken months to hire, and then after making an offer, they may take several weeks to finalize various background checks and launch onboarding efforts. The hiring process itself began to speed up both as firms tried to staff up in the budding economy and as millions of people unexpectedly quit their jobs. Now, experts say, firms are trying to speed through the whole process. “It’s all about getting new hires to Day 1,” says Jacob Zabkowicz, vice president and general manager of global recruitment process outsourcing at Korn Ferry. “Right now, candidates interview with five companies and accept an offer, and a week later, a second company gives a better offer.”To be sure, some industries, such as travel and manufacturing, are facing this more than other sectors. And some firms are not racing to change, opting simply to make do with a smaller staff. But experts believe the unusual degree of quitting may spur on permanent changes to onboarding, which to date has had little market imperative to improve.The biggest holdup for many companies is background checks, which are particularly sluggish due to understaffed courts and short-staffed background check companies, says Kristy Steiner, vice president for RPO client services at Korn Ferry. She suggests avoiding this logjam by offering contingency hiring, where new employees are allowed to begin jobs provisionally, and employers can release employees if issues emerge. “Money talks, and speed to get to the job and pay makes a difference,” she says. 2025-03-31Canadian Tour Q school was the first time I felt an insane amount of pressure in golf. My parents let me leave college, so if I don’t make it through, I’m going to be a complete failure. I didn’t make it. I was devastated, but I was living at home and had enough sponsorship money to play in Monday qualifiers. In 2017 I went back to Canadian Tour Q school and won by seven shots. Then, some back issues flared up. I think they were from overworking in the gym. I came back in 2018, played terribly and lost my status. I’d been a pro for three years and hadn’t had any real success. Frustrated, I played some pickup basketball and seriously sprained my ankle. I thought about quitting. The injury would heal, but I was out of money. Then a generous member at my club stepped in and supported me. I decided to keep going. I focused less on distance and more on accuracy off the tee, and it helped. I won twice on the Canadian Tour and got Korn Ferry status for the 2020 season. I was finally in a groove, then COVID hit. In 2021, I tried to change my swing to become a better wedge player, but I couldn’t make the new moves. I learned that you don’t need to change your swing, you just have to own what you do. I struggled that year. I spent the last of my money on Q school and didn’t get through. I had opened up a lot of credit cards, so I needed a side hustle. While interviewing to be a barback, a bar in Costa Mesa called The Country Club asked if I would do security. It wasn’t a rowdy place, so I wasn’t too worried about getting hurt. Most of the time you’re just checking IDs. Once in a while, you’re dealing with drunk guys who need to go home. I enjoyed it. I spent a few months practicing all day and working at night. I got my Korn Ferry status back for 2023, when all the work I’d been doing finally showed up. I had 10 top-10 finishes and earned my PGA Tour card. It didn’t happen as fast as I thought it would when I was a 21-year-old kid dropping out of college, but I was right. I made it to the tour. The
2025-04-06Broadcast partners, players and fans in countless ways over the years, the TrackMan system contributes to the automated data collection efforts by allowing ShotLink to auto-trigger on shots without input from a person.The new technology being deployed expands tracking capabilities from tee boxes only to shots hit from the fairway and around the green, where the system determines the exact 3D position of the ball at any point in its flight. The TrackMan technology has the ability to lock onto a ball that starts behind the trees and only becomes visible to the radar halfway through its flight. It’s able to accurately track balls up to 400 yards in any conditions; rain, fog, sunrise, and sunset.For a typical TOUR event, around 40 units are placed around the course to track shots with advanced radar and camera units on tee boxes and greens to capture final resting position.TrackMan also recently developed a mobile system that will be used for the capture of radar and tracing information from the fairway and will automatically integrate into TOUR media platforms, which is aided by AWS, the TOUR’s Official Cloud Provider. There are no cables or connections with the mobile system, which adds very little weight for the operator. The TOUR is testing the mobile system for expanded future use on PGA TOUR Champions, the Korn Ferry Tour and in other executions.The club and ball tracking and tracing system will utilize AWS Fargate, Media Services, and numerous other AWS products to process and deliver radar and tracing on every shot in nearly real-time.
