Posts : 70 Windows 7 Professional x64 New 30 Oct 2011 #1 Reassigning Media Keys on Keyboard Hi, im wondering if it is possible to reassign the media keys on my keyboard,i actually only want to change one, the one that opens up windows media player. it is annoying when i press this accidentally and WMP opens because i never use it. i either want to set it so it doesnt open anything when it is pressed or to open up itunes rather than WMP.thank you Posts : 4,466 Windows 10 Education 64 bit New 31 Oct 2011 #2 What make and model keyboard, and do you have the manufacturers software that goes with it installed? For example, Logitechs Setpoint software lets me change what program opens when I press that key on my Logitech keyboard. Failing that you may have to see if you can set iTunes as the default program for audio files and see if windows remaps that key on the keyboard to match it. Posts : 70 Windows 7 Professional x64 Thread Starter New 31 Oct 2011 #3 its on the laptop, sorry should have mentioned that, yeah i have tried setting itunes as default but that didnt change it Posts : 414 win7 ultimate 32bit New 31 Oct 2011 #4 try disabling WMP--since you don't use it--just uncheck it in the box shown in the attached screen capture Posts : 70 Windows 7 Professional x64 Thread Starter New 01 Nov 2011 #5 thanks that does stop anything coming up, annoyingly it disable windows media center when i disable media player. Posts : 4,466 Windows 10 Education 64 bit New 01 Nov 2011 #6 That could be tricky on a laptop. My old Acer Aspire uses a Launcher app to program a couple of special keys for launching a web browser or e-mail app etc. I can reassign those keys. The one key that originally launched the Acer Arcade (which is not installed) now launches Windows Media Center. I haven't figured out how to change that key. I actually use Media Center so I haven't gone out of my way to remap that key. It looks to be a special key that Acer added. For media player I just remapped one of the other media keys. You may have to install similar software for your laptop to get control over those key functions. Windows will I believe give some of the obvious ones default functions. The Home key, e-mail key, volume up down etc all work out of the box on my Logitech keyboard on my desktop PC without installing Setpoint. The super special blue keys don't though, unless you install setpoint. Once Setpoint is installed

None of the previous solutions should work, as the problem is in the ATK Media utility provided by Asus. Instead of emitting keyboard events (like normal media keys), it maps them to specific applications (you can actually change those applications in the registry, see here order and name of applications that it looks for change depending on version and system, but luckily there's an easier fix to enable the use of generic media key events.I just came across the solution for this after some time reading a bunch of sites.Download the rar package from this blog post: the current DMedia.exe process.Go to your ATK Media install folder (normally C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ATK Package\ATK Media) and rename DMedia.exe to DMedia.exe.old (just to be safe).Put DMedia.exe you'll find in the RAR into the ATK Media directory. Double click it to run it, but it gets run at boot anyway.Check if the media keys work as they should. Grab a beer or watch a movie if it works!I just tested it on my Asus U30Jc under Windows 8 Pro 64-bits, and it works great! This tool actually maps generic keyboard events to the media keys in the integrated keyboard, so they work with any application enabled for this (in some cases like Winamp you might need to enable global keys). After enabling hotkeys in VLC media player, it should work with no problems, and with any other media program too (Spotify, Windows Media Player, Winamp, Xbox Music, etc).
