Yeah, I know, everyone's sick of the term "Souls-like," but few games are more like Dark Souls than Mortal Shell. It tries so hard to capture the precise tone and feel of Hidetaka Miyazaki's vision that I think a better descriptor for it would be "bite-sized Souls." This particular Souls-like condenses the idea of games like Bloodborne and Dark Souls into a compact but worthy package that should only take around 12 to 18 hours to beat, and it manages to introduce just enough smart new ideas to avoid feeling like old news to Souls veterans.It’s both a compliment and a criticism when I say that because Mortal Shell is either fiercely loyal or slavishly derivative, depending on how you look at it. Its fealty to Dark Souls is apparent in the moody landscapes, vague story, and creepy NPCs muttering spooky lines, and it's especially evident in the enemies that come close to killing you with a single hit. Most differences are cosmetic: instead of "souls," you collect "tar" and "glimpses" you spend on upgrades, and of course you'll have to run and pick them back up if you die. In the first couple of hours, it can be brutally difficult to find your footing. And just in case you doubted that this is anything other than an obsessive love letter to FromSoftware's games, even the interface looks a little too familiar in some spots.But there are some clearly unique aspects as well, and Mortal Shell's name points to a big one. The main menu of Shell Shockers as of Version 0.48.0 The Main Menu is the first page seen when Shell Shockers is loaded. As shown in the picture you can see your in-game statistics and the gun skin you are currently wearing, the amount of Golden Eggs you have in the top right and the top left are servers you can select to play in. There are also many different and fun features explained and shown below. At the bottom, there is the play button, the option to make a private game for you and your friends to play in, and the option to select what country server you would like to play on. Below the golden eggs, there are 3 icons. The first one is the shell shocker's most recent update. Number 2 is the Twitch icon which shows the list of streamers currently streaming shell shockers. And the last one is some epic videos made by shell shockers content creators. You can change your in-game name, change the game mode (Free for All, Teams, Capture the Spatula and King of the Coop), change your in-game server, join a public match, create a private game, join a private game and join the VIP Club. You can see your profiles statistics such as Kills, Deaths, KDR, etc. What weapon and skin are currently equipped and access to your inventory are also found on the main menu page. Additionally, you are able to see the latest news as well as whoever is live streaming Shell Shockers on both Twitch and Youtube in the same panel. On the bottom center of the page, you can see the current game version, the Privacy Policy, and Terms of Service. On the bottom right of the page, you have to scroll down to see the Facebook Page, Twitter Page, TikTok Page, Instagram Page, Steam Page, Discord Server, The New Yolker sign up link, and the Blue Wizard Digital Twitch Channel.
