Message/Author Does Mplus offer an easy way to obtain the values of total effects (i.e. the sum of all direct and indirect effects)? No, Mplus does not give the values of total effects. Tauhid posted on Thursday, April 24, 2003 - 6:39 am Hello: I am Ph.D. candidate at Washington State University, Pullman. Currently I am working a paper where I am using MIMIC model (Multiple Indicators and Multiple Causes (Goldbergers' MIMIC Model). Can I estimate this MIMIC model General DescriptionMplus is a statistical modeling program that provides researchers with a flexible tool to analyze their data. Mplus offers researchers a wide choice of models, estimators, and algorithms in a program that has an easy-to-use interface and graphical displays of data and analysis results. Mplus allows the analysis of both cross-sectional and longitudinal data, single-level and multilevel data, data that come from different populations with either observed or unobserved heterogeneity, and data that contain missing values. Analyses can be carried out for observed variables that are continuous, censored, binary, ordered categorical (ordinal), unordered categorical (nominal), counts, or combinations of these variable types. In addition, Mplus has extensive capabilities for Monte Carlo simulation studies, where data can be generated and analyzed according to any of the models included in the program. The Mplus modeling framework draws on the unifying theme of latent variables. The generality of the Mplus modeling framework comes from the unique use of both continuous and categorical latent variables. Continuous latent variables are used to represent factors corresponding to unobserved constructs, random effects corresponding to individual differences in development, random effects corresponding to variation in coefficients across groups in hierarchical data, frailties corresponding to unobserved heterogeneity in survival time, liabilities corresponding to genetic susceptibility to disease, and latent response variable values corresponding to missing data. Categorical latent variables are used to represent latent classes corresponding to homogeneous groups of individuals, latent trajectory classes corresponding to types of development in unobserved populations, mixture components corresponding to finite mixtures of unobserved populations, and latent response variable categories corresponding to missing data. The Mplus Modeling FrameworkThe purpose of modeling data is to describe the structure of data in a simple way so that it is understandable and interpretable. Essentially, the modeling of data amounts to specifying a set of relationships between variables. The figure below shows the types of relationships that can be modeled in Mplus. The rectangles represent observed variables. Observed variables can be outcome variables or background variables. Background variables are referred to as x; continuous and censored outcome variables are referred to as y; and binary, ordered categorical (ordinal), unordered categorical (nominal), and count outcome variables are referred to as u. The circles represent latent variables. Both continuous and categorical latent variables are allowed. Continuous latent variables are referred to as f. Categorical latent variables are referred to as c.The arrows in the figure represent regression relationships between variables.Mplus Discussion Integration Points - statmodel.com
I note that my model is a nonrecursive model (y6 ->y7 and y7->y6). Thank you! This is explained here I would recommend you look for a model modification that resolves the problem. I need to obtain total effects, but Mplus says "MODEL INDIRECT is not available for TYPE=TWOLEVEL with ALGORITHM=INTEGRATION." Any recommendation on how I can get total effects? Thank you! Lazarus AduaYou can create these using MODEL CONSTRAINT.Thank you!Dear Professors Muthén and Muthén: I use Mplus 6 to calculate a simple indirect model (with two mediators) In my model, the direct influence is not significant but the path between IV to mediators and mediators to DV is significant. My question is about the total indirect effect and the indirect effect. In my results the "total indirect" value is significant, while the indirect values are not significant. Is there something wrong in my results? or I can simply interpret that the total indirect effect is the result of summing up the indirect paths (although non are significant) Thanks in advanceThis can happen and is ok. Tanya posted on Friday, May 13, 2016 - 7:58 amI'm sorry, I mean dependent variable. What method is used in mplus to decompose direct and indirect effect when dependent variable is nominal? We don't provide effects for a nominal DV. It is not clear how that should be defined. It seems like you can instead look at a series of binary outcome models for each category of the nominal.Dear Professors, For my PhD research, I am trying to examine if there is mediation between of a given variable in the relationship between my independent variable and my outcome variable. I performed the syntax in Mplus using the MODEL indirect command, and putting in the analysis command bootstrap and in the output command I wrote CINT (bcbootstrap). After the syntax, the output was reading normally. However, when analysing the output, the total effect between the independent variable and the outcome variable didn't appear after the row "TOTAL, TOTAL INDIRECT, SPECIFIC INDIRECT, and DIRECT EFFECTS". After this row, it only appeared the indirect effect. Could you please tell me if I miss something when performing the syntax? Does the Mplus provide the total effect? Many thanks in advance for your help. Filipa CaladoYou must specify the IND statement with only one variable on the left-hand side and one variable on the right-hand side to get these other effects. Otherwise, you get just the specific effect you mention.Thank you very much Linda. I did that and now I have the total effect. Regressions relationships that are allowed but not specifically shown in the figure include regressions among observed outcome variables, among continuous latent variables, and among categorical latent variables. For continuous outcome variables, linear regression models are used. For censored outcome variables, censored (tobit) regression models are used, with or without inflation at the censoring point. For binary and ordered categorical outcomes, probit or logistic regressions models are used. For unordered categorical outcomes, multinomial logistic regression models are used. For count outcomes, Poisson and negative binomial regression models are used, with or without inflation at the zero point.Models in Mplus can include continuous latent variables, categorical latent variables, or a combination of continuous and categorical latent variables. In the figure above, Ellipse A describes models with only continuous latent variables. Ellipse B describes models with only categorical latent variables. The full modeling framework describes models with a combination of continuous and categorical latent variables. The Within and Between parts of the figure above indicate that multilevel models that describe individual-level (within) and cluster-level (between) variation can be estimated using Mplus.. Using Mplus? I am new to Mplus, and therefore I am unable to use it. Please advice me how? PS: My MIMIC model is as follows: Suppose I have a single latent variable which we call health status (h). Latent health status has many observable indicators say, (Y, which is a vector). Moreover, the latent health status has many cause variables say (X-vector). So we have a problem where the latent variable (h) is a linearly determined by vectors of cause variables (X), and the latent variable (h) in turn determines the vector of indicators variables (Y). (1) h= alpha*x+ error term (2) y= beta*h+ error term Then the reduced model is: y=alpha*beta*x+ error term Now, I want to estimate the latent variable h, coefficients alpha and beta. With Best Regards! Tauhid Chapter 18 of the Mplus User's Guide has examples showing how to set up a MIMIC model. You can also find examples at www.statmodel.com under Examples, Continuous Outcomes, Factor analysis with covariates. A MIMIC model is a confirmatory factor analysis model with covariates. Anonymous posted on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 6:48 pm I am considering a mediating effect model across multi-groups.How can I test the difference of mediating effect across groups. Many thanks. bmuthen posted on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 7:11 am I think you refer to an indirect effect, that is a product of two slopes. If that is correct, Mplus Version 3 gives the standard error for this indirect effect. Testing difference (or rather equality) across groups would seem straightforward if there are no across-group parameter equality constraints because then the difference test is based on uncorrelated parameter estimates. So you only use the SEs for each indirect effect. If there across-group constraints, you would need to use covariances between parameters in the different groups which isn't readily available for indirect effects, but would have to be worked out via the Delta method. Anonymous posted on Monday, November 08, 2004 - 5:26 am I've heard about the possibilty to compute 'indiect effects' now.
