The week is in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter, which means it’s time for the Sunday Substitute! It’s the article where I get some valuable minutes while the star is resting on the bench. I might not have the time to do this every week, but I like to think I’m still making a contribution to the team. Since it looks like NBA Live 18 will be released this year, I figured it would be a fantastic opportunity to look back at NBA Live 16 and determine what features are worth salvaging. For this article, I’m going to focus on the player upgrade system.I really love the player creation and upgrade system in NBA Live 16. It began for me with the most seamless face scan I have ever done in any video game. I’m not sure how everyone else went with it, but I know that my player in NBA Live 16 looks much more like me than any player I’ve created in the NBA 2K series. But my appreciation for player customisation in NBA Live 16 has gone far beyond that since I bought a full copy of the game. Not only is the player upgrade system an excellent feature in NBA Live 16, but I believe it is superior to that of NBA 2K16, and even NBA 2K17. I know it’s a big call – since the NBA 2K games have the advantage in most areas – but I think NBA Live 16 had some intuitive features when it comes to upgrading created players. So, here are the player upgrade features that I not only love in NBA Live 16, but I think should be considered for NBA Live 18.Upgrade Individual AttributesWhen it comes to upgrading attributes, the simplest way is often the best. In NBA Live 16, the user can upgrade individual attributes. So, if you think your player needs improvement in stealing the ball, their quickness across the court, or shooting the ball from a specific range, you can improve these skills without improving the entire category they fall under. It makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?On top of being able to upgrade individual attributes, you can also see your ratings in the categories they fall under. This allows you to see numerically what your strengths and weaknesses are as a player. The most recent NBA 2K titles have represented these categorical ratings through graphs. While these make for interesting visual guides, it can often be hard to quantify just how good your player really is in specific areas. This could just be a personal preference, but I believe numerical ratings convey a player’s skill so much clearer.Unlock In-Game AbilitiesIn conjunction with upgrading That I’d forego using a disc for NBA Live 16, as I also own it digitally. For whatever reason – to save time, probably – I opted to reinstall the game from the disc some time before the servers went offline in 2020.I figured that attempting to install the digital version would leave the files intact, and change the validation method from the disc to my PSN account. This is basically what I did with NBA 2K23 on PS5 when it became available to add to my digital library via PlayStation Plus. Since then, I no longer have to insert the NBA 2K23 disc (as long as I have an active subscription, anyway). I figured that it’d be the same with the digital version of NBA Live 16. No such luck; it had to be a separate installation. That would’ve been fine, but since I was running low on hard drive space, I uninstalled the disc version. No matter though, as my NBA Live 16 data would still be there…right?Wrong! When I fired up the digital version of NBA Live 16, I still had my save files including my Rising Star player and all of his progress, and a Dynasty file that I’d saved while taking some screenshots. Unfortunately, I’d lost all of the roster updates, including the final update that added moves from the 2016 Draft, such as the Derrick Rose trade. Since NBA Live 16 doesn’t have any roster editing, there’s no way to manually update the gameNBA SK’s Tweets - Twitter

Entering the 1983 playoffs, 76ers center Moses Malone boasted that his team would go “fo’, fo’, fo’” — 4-0 in three straight playoff series to win the NBA title. Philadelphia went 12-1, dropping Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals to the Bucks before sweeping the Lakers. Malone’s dream of an undefeated postseason was never realized, by his Sixers or any other team. The Golden State Warriors just had the best regular season in NBA history, including a 24-0 streak out of the gate. Can they do Malone one better and go “fo’, fo’, fo’, fo’ ”? Based on 50,000 simulations of the NBA playoffs using our NBA CARM-Elo ratings, probably not:TEAMOCCURRENCES IN 50,000 SIMSCHANCESWarriors1990.40%–Spurs1360.27–Cavaliers110.02–Thunder100.02–Raptors60.01–Clippers1Hawks1Hornets1Chances of going 16-0 to win the 2016 NBA titleThe NBA playoffs are stacked this year. The Warriors have been historically great, but so have the Spurs. And the Thunder, Cavaliers, Clippers and Raptors are fielding strong teams. Our model currently gives Golden State just a 42 percent chance of repeating its title, so to escape four rounds unscathed would be a near-impossible achievement. We put it at 0.40 percent. But 16-0 is a lot to ask. The greatest playoff run in NBA history belongs to the 2000-01 Los Angeles Lakers, who were undefeated entering the Finals. They then ran right into Allen Iverson, who did this: … and also this: The Lakers would go on to win the last four games, finishing with a 15-1 postseason record. Now that the first round playoff series are seven games instead of five, the Warriors could surpass that winning percentage by going 16-1. Alas, they probably won’t:TEAMOCCURRENCES IN 50,000 SIMSCHANCESWarriors1,0992.20%–Spurs6691.34–Cavaliers610.12–Thunder430.09–Raptors320.06–Hornets70.01Clippers50.01Hawks50.01Celtics1Trail Blazers1Chances of going 16-1 or better to win the 2016 NBA titleWe give Golden State roughly a 1-in-45 chance of following up the greatest regular season ever with the greatest postseason ever. From the default rosters that I’m now stuck with. On one hand, I’d prefer Rose to still be in Chicago if I were to ever start a Bulls Dynasty in NBA Live 16. On the other hand, it’s annoying to have lost those updates and content.Honestly, the loss that bugs me the most is the face scan for my Rising Star player. It wasn’t the best scan – my NBA Live 18 and 19 scans turned out much better – but it was still preferable to the limited customisation with the default faces. The Summer Circuit and LIVE Run obviously aren’t available now that online support has ended, but Rising Star is still playable, and I might’ve been keener to revisit it with a player that had my face (slightly discoloured by shadow as it may have been). I’d hoped that that data would’ve been retained in my save file, though given my experiences with reinstalling NBA 2K titles, I should’ve known that the face scan would be wiped.Needless to say, just as there’s no way to retrieve those lost roster updates, there’s no way to perform another face scan without a working companion app, and servers to send that data through to NBA Live 16. Indeed, after all these years, minimal legacy support, new phones, and several Android updates, I’m not sure that face scanning with NBA Live 19’s companion app still works, either. Having already lost my scan for NBA Live 16, I’m not about to mess aroundComments

Jordan's PS3/360 cyberfaces are far superior as are the PS3/360 retro jerseys. The lack of detail put into the classic teams is the biggest reason my PS4 copy of 2k15 collects dust on my shelf. As of right now I'm not getting 2k16. All I've been playing this season is 2k14 for PC with Hawk's patch.
