Welcome to my third OpenToonz tutorial! In this tutorial I will talk about levels in OpenToonz and the variety of tools that affect them and how they change for each type.I will not be going over the basic OpenToonz set up, so you should consider checking out this tutorial first if you haven't already, since I will refer to it a lot.If a tool is very complex and requires a lot of explanation, I will just explain the general idea and link to another tutorial, or just keep it open for later once I have a tutorial for it.NOTE: I am using the windows version 1.2.1. I will also use the Xsheet view instead of the timeline. All said here will apply to the timeline the same, but screenshots will show the xsheet. It should still be easy to follow. What are Levels in OpenToonz?A level is a collection of images that share properties, like the style palette, size and type.I touched on this briefly in my first tutorial, but OpenToonz is fairly unique since it is more based on traditional animation techniques, which has its benefits but is harder to grasp. How to see the level itself in OpenToonz?First, let us add a window that shows the currently selected level in it's entirety. Near the top, go to Windows -> Level Strip and a new window will show up. You should be able to dock it somewhere practical. Imagine this is like a stack of papers. It is currently empty, but, if you draw a line in a few consecutive empty frames you will see the stack fill up. It will probably automatically get a single name letter (A for me) and look green if you are doing this with the set up I outlined in the first tutorial. Do keep in mind the timeline and the level are NOT the one and the same. If you now delete all the images from the timeline, the level will remain unaffected. It will disappear from the level strip too, but, if you double click on an empty frame and type in the name Adobe Animate is a program you’re already familiar with if you’ve ever made animations. Ghibli’s developing in-house aesthetic from Mononoke onwards compared with other digital tools and packages is a moot point. As Arias surmises, “I’d say most of the innovation at Ghibli was in interesting application of existing software plus first rate art direction. Either way, any traditional animation house relying on digital animation (2D or 3D) in those days had to have a technical director or digital animation person who evangelized the capabilities of the tool to the ‘traditional’ creative staff. Part of being a ‘traditional’ craft is a certain conservative outlook on tools and technology (as witnessed by Ghibli’s back-to-basics approach of late).”In a nutshell, it seems the revolutionary potential of OpenToonz has been rather overstated: imagination, artistry, rich storytelling, technical expertise and perhaps most crucially a gargantuan amount of person-hours will continue to remain key factors when it comes to creating state-of-the-art animation. Ultimately these are things that will never be freely available online.Jasper Sharp is the author of the Historical Dictionary of Japanese Cinema.
